Cuba Libre was born during the war between the United States and Spain in the 2nd War of Independence (1895 to 1898).
One day, a group of American soldiers met in a bar in Havana's Old Quarter. Fausto Rodriguez, a young officer, later recounted that a captain had come in and ordered rum and Coca-Cola on the rocks, with a wedge of lime. This aroused the curiosity of the soldiers around him. They asked the barman to serve them the same cocktail.
